awd ball joint modification

This mod should only be done if you are installing lifting keys and plan on cranking them up too full lift.

The Astro/Safari ball joint modification is simply moving the upper ball joint from the top of the upper control arm to the bottom of the upper control arm. This modification is a must do when installing lifting keys. It helps fix the bad math created when cranking up your torsion bar keys. It works in the same way that ball joint spacers do, on the 2WD vans.
Picture
With the van safely supported on jack stands. I like to release the tension on the torsion bars. With the shocks in place, to hold the lower control arm from dropping.
Picture
If four bolts are holding in you upper ball joint, then your ball joints has been replaced, and there is no need to remove the OEM rivets. If you have the OEM joints, now's a good time to replace them, their cheep.
Picture
If you have the OEM rivets holding in your ball joints, the easiest way to remove them is to drill them out before unbolting the ball joint from the spindle. I like to grind off the head of the rivet first. If you don't have a grinder, you can use a large drill bit to cut the head off, after drilling into the rivet.
Picture
Center punch the two rivets too keep your drill bit from wandering off center.
Picture
Starting with a small drill bit, drill a pilot hole. this will lessen the chances of getting off center. Only drill 3/4 of the way thru the rivet. putting tape on the drill bit as a gauge can help.
Picture
Depending on how far off center your pilot holes are, use a larger drill bit to drill 3/4 of the way into the rivet. Try not to drill the control arm.
Picture
With a punch and a hammer, drive the rivets out. If it won't go, try drilling a little deeper or larger hole.
Picture
Unbolt the large ball joint nut. leaving the nut on the ball joint a few threads will keep the spindle from unexpectedly dropping.
Picture
With a few good blows with a hammer, on the side of the spindle, will release the ball joint from the spindle. Or you can use a pickle fork. Be careful not to damage the ABS wiring.
Picture
Wire wheel the bottom of the upper control arm, you wan a clean surface where the ball joint bolts too. When reassembling start with the large nut. Install with new bolts. Be sure the bolts and nuts are grade 10.9

That's it ! Note the new position of the ABS wire. If you have any question, your welcome to call me/Mike at 928-925-2360

JOURNEYS OFF ROAD SPOTLIGHT

We have been having fun with the Pacifica lately and we just wanted to spotlight these amazing vehicles. This van is the only AWD alternative to the Toyota Sienna. Even the FWD Grand Caravans that we have had over the years are great vehicles!
